Welcome to another Medieval Monday. It’s my pleasure to welcome back Barbara Bettis who has her next snippet from The Lady of the Forest. Happy reading, my lovelies!

Excerpt:

Kate shoved the pallet against the wall and gave it one last test. The flat, wooden base seemed solid, placed atop three barrels. The raised surface made easier access to the prisoner.

Jamie ducked into the hut, dragging the door open. Behind the boy came Oscar and Sam’l, bearing the unconscious knight.

“Please remove his chain mail, then put him there.” She nodded toward the makeshift bed.

The two dropped him on the floor.

THE LADY OF THE FOREST

He must pursue his enemy; she must protect her people. Can their love survive the duties that drive them apart?

Blurb:

When her elderly husband dies, Lady Katherine fakes her own death and disappears into the forest with others escaping the brutish new lord. Determined to protect her people, she knocks the wrong man senseless. But Lord Henry isn’t an enemy, he’s the brother of her childhood friend. Although his tender confidence tempts her, she’s bound by duty.

Henry of Chauvere has found the one lady he wants for his own, never mind she’s tied him hand and foot. When he learns the king has ordered her to wed Stonehill’s ruthless new master, he insists Kate seek haven with his sister. But she won’t desert her friends. Henry vows to solve her problem, provided he catches a traitor before the threat from Kate’s past catches her.

When a daring rescue compels Henry and Kate to join forces, their attraction grows into love. If only duty didn’t drive them apart.

It’s Medieval Monday and we’re on week five of our first meet theme. This week, please help me welcome guest Cathy MacRae who has an excerpt from The Highlander’s Welsh Bride. Enjoy, my lovelies, and happy reading!

Excerpt:

“A short sword at my back, two dirks in my belt, three throwing blades at wrist and boot, and a sgian dubh in the other boot,” he said, as if reading her thoughts.

Carys shrugged. “I do not like being a prisoner.”

“Killing me willnae get ye released. ’Twould be another feat to fight yer way down the stairs and out of the tower. Plenty of men would be anxious to stop ye before ye traveled far.”

The Highlander’s Welsh Bride

It was over. Prince Llywelyn was dead, his soldiers fleeing before King Edward’s army. Carys, a distant cousin to the prince, herself a princess of Wales, had picked up arms alongside her husband more than a year ago. Now homeless, her husband buried beneath the good Welsh soil, she seeks shelter in the north, far from the reach of Longshanks’s men. Carys and Wales would never be the same again.

It was time. Birk MacLean has been ordered to take a bride and produce an heir. He grows weary of the lasses paraded before him, women of delicate nature and selfish motives. He desires a wife strong enough to help lead one of the most powerful clans in Western Scotland.

One like the Welsh woman sitting in his dungeon, arrested for poaching MacLean deer.

Can Birk convince Carys marriage to him is preferable to a hangman’s noose? And will the heard-headed Scot be worthy of a Princess of Wales?

From the towering Welsh mountains to the storm-swept Scottish coast comes a tale of betrayal and loss, deceit and passion. An epic tale of honor and the redeeming power of love.

Welcome to week four of Medieval Monday. Our first meet theme continues and today’s guest is my friend Judith Sterling who has an snippet from Shadow of the Swan. Be sure to read all the way down to be in the running for Judith’s giveaway! Happy reading and enjoy!

Excerpt:

The red veil lifted, revealing two pairs of dusty, leather boots, one of which sported the gilt spurs of a knight.  “He’s gone.  You may come out now.”

God be praised!  She crawled out from under the table, stood, and met the steel-gray gaze of her savior.

’Twas one thing to be handsome; the knight before her took it entirely too far.  He appeared to be in his late twenties and was clean-shaven, with strong features and straight, jaw-length black hair.  Tall, broad-shouldered, and clad in blue, he cut a striking figure.  Yet something indefinable struck her more.  The longer she stared into his eyes, the more familiar he seemed.  They’d met before.  Shrouded were the details, but a link existed…invisible and ever fixed.

She found her tongue.  “Sir Robert, I presume?”

Blurb:

Lady Constance de Bret was determined to be a nun, until shadows from the past eclipsed her present. Marriage is the safest option, but she insists on a spiritual union, in which physical intimacy is forbidden. Not so easy with a bridegroom who wields unparalleled charm! But a long-buried secret could taint his affection and cloak her in shadow forever.

Back from the Crusades, Sir Robert le Donjon craves a home of his own and children to inherit it. From the moment he meets Constance, he feels a mysterious bond between them. When she’s threatened, he vows to protect her and agrees to the spiritual marriage, with the hope of one day persuading her to enjoy a “real” one. She captivates him but opens old wounds and challenges everything he thought he believed.

Two souls in need of healing. Two hearts destined to beat as one.

It’s week two of our Medieval Monday hop. This week I’m hosting author Ruth A. Casie and her excerpt from The Pirate’s Jewel. Isn’t this cover just stunning. Happy reading, my lovelies, and enjoy!

Excerpt:

“The Black Opal approached us at the Point. When we shifted the rudder to avoid a collision, we lost the wind, but by adjusting the mainsail and using the lateen, we caught the wind, circled the pirates, and sailed into the channel. The Black Opal’s sheet was limp. They had to use their oars,” Maxwell said.

“Luck?” Lord Ewan’s left eyebrow raised a bit.

Good morning, my lovelies, and welcome back to Medieval Monday! I know we’ve had a bit of a dry spell so let’s jump right back into it, shall we? I’m going back to my roots with my debut novel from 2014, If My Heart Could See You and the first encounter when Dristan, the Devil’s Dragon of Blackmore and Amiria of Berwyck sleeping upon the sand. Only thing is… he doesn’t know who she is since she’s been in disguise, posing as her twin brother, Aiden. This is a bit longer than a snippet but you know me… I’m long winded. Be sure to leave me a comment to be in the running for my giveaway. Happy reading & enjoy!

Excerpt:

Sitting there, he fully surveyed his surroundings for the first time. The castle was well in the distance now, but still appeared impressive situated on a high cliff. If it had been anyone other than him and his army, they would have been hard put to penetrate its defenses. He planned to reinforce the walls where he had found weaknesses so no other would ever take by force what now belonged to him.

Thor stamped his hooves in the sand impatient to be on the run again, but Dristan only gave him a pat on the neck and continued holding the reins loosely in his gloved hands. The sun chose that moment to peek from beneath the clouds and the sand came alive as if ’twere covered in sparkling diamonds as far as the eye could see. The water shimmered whilst the waves crashed into the shore and even the trees of the nearby forest looked as if they, too, were shining a little brighter from the dew drops caressing each leaf.

Dristan was about to let Thor have his way and let the beast fly his way back to the security of the castle, when a slight movement by the edge of the forest caught his eye. He blinked once and tried to refocus his vision ’til he noticed a person lying wrapped securely in a MacLaren clan’s tartan. He watched in fascination as the person stretched and unfolded and the unmistakable form of a woman became abundantly clear.

Apparently, the woman had not realized she was no longer alone. She rose from her bed on the sand and began to shake the tiny granules from her clothing and hair. Finally, in frustration, she grabbed both ends of her tartan, which she had used as a cape of sorts, and raised it above her head, shaking out the contents that had found every fold to hide in. ’Twas only as she settled the garment around her head and fastened a broach to keep everything in place that she chose to at last look up, and a startled expression crossed her face.

Dristan gave a brief smile as he took off his gloves, dismounted, and made his way towards the woman, knowing Thor would remain where he was left. The closer he came, the more pleasantly he was surprised, ’til she pulled the tartan close about her features. Although only allowed the slightest glimpse of her face, this woman appeared as an angel with porcelain skin, a neck as graceful as a swan’s, and high cheekbones. A small pert nose and lips begging to be kissed were now hidden by the plaid she used to conceal her appearance.

If My Heart Could See You
The MacLaren’s
A Medieval Romance

When you’re enemies, does love have a fighting chance?

For Amiria of Berwyck, defeat does not come easily as she watches her home and clan being ripped asunder. When the very enemy who has laid siege to her home demands her fealty, she will do whatever it takes to protect her people including a hastily concocted ruse that quickly begins to unravel. All too soon, she starts to question whether she can forgive herself for betraying those she has sworn to protect.

Dristan of Blackmore, champion knight of King Henry II, has a reputation to uphold as the Devil’s Dragon. After his invading army conquers Berwyck castle, he sets out to manage the newly claimed estate by training its knights in the art of proper defense. At first, everything appears as it should be, or is it? Betrayed by those he believed he could trust, he must first set aside his anger before he can make room in his heart for love.

Together they are tied by an unspoken bond. As they begin to rebuild the land and unite their people, forces beyond their control attempt to tear apart their fragile truce and only time will tell if love will forever bring them together.
