Welcome to another week on my Medieval Monday blog. Today I jumped a little ahead from where I left off in A Knight To Call My Own. This picks up the chapter with Rolf on the parapet of Berwyck Castle. Rolf… let me just say I loved everything about this knight, and it just about killed me to… well… I won’t spoil it for anyone who may not have read this medieval romance. Happy reading and enjoy, my lovelies!

Excerpt:

Rolf stood silently on the narrow parapet, gazing into the darkness of the night. He could not see far enough to espy the vast ocean, but he could hear the sound of the surf pounding ruthlessly into the shore far below him. Normally, such a sound would fill him with wonder at the power of the sea, but not this eve. Tonight, he was ill at ease on what the coming days would bring, or not bring, should he fail in his quest. He still held a small sum of hope that Kenna’s vision would not come to pass.

He did not have to turn his sight far to witness the goings on of life at camp. Tents filled the area surrounding Berwyck’s walls of those who also hoped to win the fair Lynet. The smell of campfire smoke and the fire light from the torches on the battlement walls filled the air. The fumes and smells made his nose twitch, causing him to sneeze. Muffled laughter and speech was barely audible from those who were still awake, each man bragging of his own sin-gular prowess, and how he, too, would have the young bride at the end of the games.

He lifted his head heaven bound to stare at the thousands of stars splashing across the moonlit sky. Closing his eyes, he gave a silent plea God would answer his request. ’Twas a heartfelt prayer he offered up to the heavens, and yet as Rolf gazed once more up-on the open skies above him, he felt nothing giving evidence that his petitions would be met. Apparently God did not make bargains with mortal men when it came to falling in love and what the heart desired… more is the pity.

Hearing the hinges of the turret door squeak open, Rolf turned to see who would be coming up to the rooftop at such a late hour. Most had already made their way to their chambers hours ago to rest afore the games began. Slumber, however, eluded Rolf, espe-cially when he was wound so tight. The games could not begin soon enough for him to take out his frustration upon the field.

A splash of wispy material caught his attention when the unmis-takable figure of a woman appeared through the turret portal. The instant she emerged from the shelter of the doorway, a gusty breeze caught her gown, and all but floated around the vision afore his eyes. ’Twas almost as if God himself had sent him an angel in an-swer to his appeal. She attempted to gather the garment around her and at last made some progress when she pulled a tartan around her head, clutching the plaid at her breasts.

Rolf watched her progress across the battlement walls with in-terest. His placement concealed in the shadows, she obviously did not see him standing on the parapet. So engrossed was she to reach the wall herself, she stumbled, letting out a startled gasp when her foot caught on the last step. Crying out in alarm, she began to sprawl face forward, causing Rolf to swiftly close the remaining distance between them. He caught the young girl in his arms afore any harm could befall her.

Her flowery scent was the first thing to assault his senses, and he did not need to see her face to know just whom he held in his arms. His limbs seemed to have a life of their own as they offered her the support she stood in need of as she regained her balance. He took a step nearer ’til both her hands came up and pushed hard against his chest. He stood firm in his resolve to keep her at his side. His hands slid to her waist as he inched her even closer into his embrace.

“How dare you,” she shrieked in outrage. Her face rose to meet his ’til recognition set in. “Rolf?”

“Good eve to you, Lynet.”

“What are you doing out here in the middle of the night?”

He gave an amused chuckle. “I could ask you the same question. Perchance, could you not sleep, either?”

“Nay, I could not, and my chamber was stifling. I had enough of my tossing and turning. I decided I needed some fresh air.”

“I understand your plight completely, my lady.” Rolf watched her face whilst she apparently came to the realization he was holding her far too close. Her hands moved from his chest and went instead to his arms.

“You should not be holding me thusly. ’Tis not seemly. What would someone think if they came upon us?”

“Mayhap, they would think there was no longer any need for a tourney and your hand was already spoken for,” Rolf murmured.

There was no mistaking the feeling of contentment that was racing through him whilst holding her close. “There is no need to worry about the guards, for they are busy at their watch, so they will pay us no mind. Besides, I believe I like the way you feel in my arms and would like to keep you here as long as you would allow it.”

A small smile lit her lips. “I should return to my chamber,” she whispered softly, and yet, she made no effort to leave. Instead, she began caressing the fabric of his tunic.

“Stay with me,” he insisted.

Lynet gave the briefest of hesitations afore replying. “Only for a moment or two, but then, I must depart.”

Welcome to my Medieval Monday blog. I’m so happy you’ve dropped by for another excerpt from my medieval romance, A Knight to Call My Own. This week, I’m continuing on with Lynet and Ian’s meeting after a six year absence. Happy reading and enjoy, my lovelies!

Excerpt:

He advanced on her ’til she felt the wall pressed against her back. With nowhere else to turn, she held him back by firmly placing her hands upon his chest. Touching him was a huge mistake, for there was nothing but hard muscles beneath her fingertips, as solid as the stones behind her!

“Tell me you are not happy to see me, sweet Lynet.” The huskiness in his voice was almost her undoing, yet again.

She lifted her eyes to meet his. Damn! Mistake number two! She would not give him the satisfaction of knowing just how much she had missed him. “I am not happy to see you!” she retorted meaningfully. Lifting her chin a notch, she prayed the expression she gave him was a defiant one. His chuckle led her to believe she had failed in her quest to appear indifferent to his charms.

“Perchance, you should tell your eyes that, little one, for your gaze tells me your lips speak a falsehood.” His grin was surely from the devil himself, as it broadened whilst she attempted to mask her feelings for him. His deep laughter rumbled in his chest, only giving evidence she had completely forgotten her hands were still pressed upon his granite-like torso. She let go quickly with the feeling she had been burned.

“Go back to the Highlands and marry some other witless girl. I care not who you wed, as long as ’tis not me,” she yelled, pulling herself from his arms and making her way to the door. She slid the bolt back and opened the door, only to come face to face with a very angry brother-in-law.

“Is there something amiss here?” Dristan demanded.

“Nay,” Lynet cried out in frustration, “nothing is amiss. Ian and I are finished here. Let the damn games begin!”

She did not wait for his response, but ran down the corridor to her chamber. Flinging herself face down upon her bed, she allowed the tears of her frustration to finally spill forth like the churning waves of a turbulent sea. ’Twould be hours later afore she came to the sad realization she had not even acknowledged Rolf’s presence or concerned look whilst he had been standing next to their liege’s side.

Welcome to another week of Medieval Monday. Today I’m continuing on from last week with A Knight To Call My Own. It’s book two from my MacLarens series. This excerpt picks up with Lynet and Ian. She’s just a bit upset from his extremely long absence from Berwyck.Happy reading and enjoy, my lovelies!

Excerpt:

She turned towards the fire to mask the anger that was about to get the best of her, but she could not keep the words from pouring out her mouth as she turned to face him once more. “Who told you to send me such a missive?” The words rushed from her pursed lips whilst uncontrolled rage wracked her frayed nerves.

“There was only one who would share such information with me, since she had recently come from Berwyck,” Ian answered. “I do not see how this makes any sort of difference other than, at the time, I thought ’twas only right to do you such a service.”

“Who?” Lynet said between clenched teeth.

“’Twas the Lady Katherine de Deveraux, Riorden’s wife. Was she mistaken by hinting you still held an undeniable fondness for me?”

“Nay, she was not mistaken,” Lynet whispered. Recent memories flooded her mind as she remembered unburdening her soul to Katherine. She had first come to the castle with Riorden, who was a lifelong friend and comrade of Dristan’s and had been the captain of his guard. Looking at the couple, one did not need Kenna’s gift of sight to see how much they were in love, although they had had a rough course to overcome to find how deep that love truly was.

Katherine had returned several months later, alone and distraught, thinking her husband had forsaken her and had turned to another. Heavily along with child, Riorden had at last found her, once he learned his wife was actually alive and not dead at the bottom of the Coquet River near their home of Warkworth. Lynet could only surmise Katherine had most likely felt she was doing Lynet a favor by confiding to Ian. She supposed she could forgive the lady such a trespass. The timing of his return, however, could not have been worse.

“And what of now, Lynet,” Ian continued. He sought to pull her to him, but she brushed off his attempts and folded her arms about her. He gave a heavy sigh.

“Now?” She cried out with a muffled laugh, showing how truly distressed she really was. “Now, my laird, you are far too late, or did you forget I am at present only a prize to be won to the highest bidder?”

“I am sure I can convince Dristan to halt this nonsense of finding you a husband amongst those who may want to win your hand,” Ian declared. “Besides, I must needs marry, else the elders of the clan plan on ensuring they choose a bride for me.”

“Oh, do they now?” she huffed. “And, I suppose, you think I would at least be biddable and thankful to become your wife more so than any other of your acquaintance?”

“Why should my bride not be, at least, someone with whom I am familiar? At least, I know you.”

“Ha! You do not know me, else you would have been here long ago and not kept me waiting six long years to see you again!”

Hello, my lovelies, and welcome to Medieval Monday! I thought I’d go back to the second book in my MacLaren series with an excerpt from A Knight to Call My Own! I just loved how Lynet and Ian’s story turned out and actually had one reader say this book should come with a warning label since she was crying while waiting in a doctor’s office. I’ll say my job was done! Happy reading and enjoy!

Excerpt:

Ian ran his finger down one of her cheeks. She shivered in delight as her body naturally responded to the subtle caress. “We have not much time for speech, Lynet,” he whispered tenderly.

She saw his lips moving, but her feeble attempt to pay attention to his words failed her as panic of being alone with him began to set in. “What?”

He looked on her with an amused expression. “Dristan…he will come in search of us,” he answered. “I but wished to speak with you privately so we could come to an arrangement.”

“An arrangement?” Her eyes narrowed when she became suspicious of his motives for being here. Does he honestly believe he can just lay claim to me as easily as that?

“Aye.”

He does! Merciful heavens, did she appear to him as some simpleton, or merely a naive fool who would willingly come to him after a crook of his finger?

Lynet pulled out of his arms and stood behind a chair, as if this simple act of putting such an inconsequential piece of furniture between them in itself would protect her from his advances. “Surely, you jest, or did you not witness the spectacle outside our gates?” She was doing everything within her power not to let her temper flare out of control.

“Nay, I do not see the matter as something to jest about,” Ian replied, taking several steps towards her. “I would have thought you to be happy to see me after all this time, or am I mistaken?”

“I would have been happier if I had seen you afore you sent that bloody note!”

“I had nothing to offer you at the time ’twas written, Lynet. Surely, you can understand my plight and reasoning for sending such a missive.”

“I waited for you for all those years, and you wrote me but a few lines. A few lines, Ian!” Her fingers balled into fists at her side. Although, in truth, she would have liked to have beat them against his chest to drive the point of her frustration into his thick skin. How could he not know what his absence had done to her poor little heart?

“I told you at my leaving not to wait. Nothing changed over the years, and ’twas not ’til recently that I was told I should write so you could go on with your life.”

“You did not even write of your own accord?” she shouted at him and began shaking with fury.

Welcome to my First Kiss Friday Blog! Today’s guest is my dear friend Mary Morgan who will be ringing us into the upcoming holiday season. Mary has an excerpt from Wishes Under a Highland Star. Isn’t the cover just beautiful? We hope you enjoy this peek into her world. Take it away, Mary!

Hello, Sherry! I’m delighted to be on your lovely blog today! I’m sharing the “first kiss” from my upcoming Scottish medieval romance, Wishes Under a Highland Star. Enjoy, and Happy Holidays!

Excerpt:

Alex grumbled a curse and walked away. Striding with intent, he gave a curt nod in passing when Aine stepped from her safe haven.

She hurried after him. “Ye are bleeding.”

“Aye,” he returned, making long strides through the bailey and ignoring her concern.

“The cut requires tending to. Glenna is a healer. I can take ye there,” she suggested, doing her best to keep up with him.

“Nae need.”

“What do ye mean?” she pressed.

Alex clenched his jaw. Rory’s talk about marriage settled like a nettle’s sting. Without a clear path in front of him, he had no intention of luring any woman into his life with false hope. Especially the one who smelled like wildflowers on a spring day with enchanting eyes that beguiled him.

“The wound will heal in time,” he gritted out, sweeping past a yew tree and heading toward the sounds of a nearby stream.

Aine grasped his arm with a force that surprised him. “Can ye stop for a moment!”

Halting his stride, he glared down at her. The look he gave her would singe the hair from any warrior or animal. “Do ye have more to say?”

“Why do ye refuse aid?” she demanded, fisting her hands on her round hips.

Her stubborn refusal to leave intrigued Alex. Would she flee if he challenged her? He lowered his head near hers. “Why do ye care?”

Her eyes widened, and her luscious lips parted. “Because I do,” she whispered.

Alex’s breathing became shallow and the air around them thick. Her pink lips begged to be kissed. Would they be as sweet as berries? Or as heady as the wine he drank last evening? An ache to take her in his arms filled him.

He wrestled with the conflict—duty, honor, possession. She was pure as new-fallen snow on a crisp morn, and he no better than a rutting stag. Though his hands shook to hold her in his arms, Alex steeled his emotions and moved away from her.

Ye deserve a better man, Aine. Ye are a beauty, and I am but a beast.

Aine’s smile came slowly as she took a step toward him and did the unthinkable. Standing on her tiptoes, she brushed a kiss along his bearded cheek. “Is it wrong to care for ye?”

Indecision plagued him as he regarded her—disbelieving, curious as to what his real fear might be. Shoving aside the conflict within, Alex grasped her around the waist. He nuzzled the spot below her ear. “Ye tempt your fate with a kiss, Aine? With a man ye do not ken?”

She lifted her gaze to his—her cheeks flushed with a rosy hue. “Did I tempt ye?”

And there Alex witnessed the invitation in the smoldering depths of her lavender eyes. By the hounds! What was the lass doing? She had transformed to a siren, tempting him beyond reason, luring him with her heady scent and enticing song.

With his restraint failing, Alex deemed a lesson proved in order—one that would hopefully frighten her away from him. His eyes raked boldly over her lush curves. Crushing Aine to his chest, he devoured what she had to offer. The kiss became demanding, urgent, forcing her to open fully to the seduction and pleasure. His tongue quested with a burning need to conquer—slipping inside her sweetness. He drew forth her moan and answered with one of his own, kissing her more deeply. Gripping her waist firmly, Alex slowly walked her backward until her back hit the rough bark of a tree.

The kiss sang through his veins, igniting a hunger beyond anything he had known. Alex angled his head to take more of her sweet lips and hungrily feasted on something he dared not take.

Welcome to my blog… since my days got away from me, instead of a Medieval Monday post, you’re getting a blast from the past on a Tuesday. I’m sure you don’t mind. Today I thought I’d take you back to the beginning with an excerpt from my first published book If My Heart Could See You. It’s the novel that began everything for my medieval and time travel series. I hope you enjoy this excerpt. Happy reading, my lovelies!

Excerpt:

Merciful heavens, what was she to do? His words hung in the air between them, and her consciousness frantically screamed to find an answer to give him and quickly! Yet, no rebuttal came to her frozen mind as Amiria stood there in total indecisiveness. She knew she could not allow him to get too close on the off chance he might recognize her, even though her face was clean from the grime and mud usually gracing it these days. ’Twas the words he uttered, haunting her as he had spoken them to her once afore, although she was now in a different guise.

“Somehow, I do not think giving you my name would be in my best interest, my lord,” she said quietly and took but an instant more to gaze at him afore her eyes became downcast. Her mind was racing, thinking of only how to escape the predicament she now found herself in with no horse to hasten her journey.

Dristan gave a soft chuckle at her words. “Mayhap not, but ’twould please me to know it just the same.”

“It matters not to me if you are pleased, so I will keep it unto myself I think,” she retorted sharply.

“I see a task afore me that I might coax it from your lips,” he prompted, taking a step in her direction. For each footstep he advanced, Amiria took one in the opposite direction towards the forest ’til he halted.

“Call it as you see fit, but ’twill still not gain you what you seek.” Amiria watched as he laughed out loud, but she could not find the humor of the situation from her words she had spoken.

“I do so love a challenge,” he argued humorously.

“Do you?” she asked sarcastically. “And what, pray tell, do you achieve if you should know my name, my lord?”

Dristan looked on her with a slight smile set upon his handsome face. “Why I achieve the name of a beautiful woman I would like to know better.”

She contemplated him again, wondering at his ploy. “And how know you I am beautiful with just one glimpse of my face?”

“Anyone with eyes in his head could tell, fair damsel, you are indeed a fine looking woman.”

“They say beauty is not everything, my lord Dristan. Perchance I have a shrewish nature, as I have been told such afore.”

“Somehow, I think not.”

“Do you?” she repeated the same words of but seconds ago.

He interrupted her. “Besides, ’tis not fair you should know who I am, but I am not granted the same.”

“Any and all would be a fool not to know the Devil’s Dragon of Blackmore now claims his lair in Berwyck Castle.”

“Then you have heard of me and my reputation has proceeded me,” he cajoled.

“Aye, my lord, I have indeed knowledge of you.”

“I see you do not fear me, as some do upon first encountering me. Why is that, I wonder, when you in truth do not know my nature?” he questioned honestly.

“I fear no man,” she answered, as she raised her head defiantly with a flip of her head, “or beast for that matter!”

Dristan threw his head back and laughed. It sounded pleasant to her ears. “Well said, damsel. Mayhap in you I have finally met my match! Still you have me at a loss mistress…besides not giving me your name, that is.”

If My Heart Could See You – The MacLarens
A Medieval Romance

By Sherry Ewing

When you’re enemies, does love have a fighting chance?

For Amiria of Berwyck, defeat does not come easily as she watches her home and clan being ripped asunder. When the very enemy who has laid siege to her home demands her fealty, she will do whatever it takes to protect her people including a hastily concocted ruse that quickly begins to unravel. All too soon, she starts to question whether she can forgive herself for betraying those she has sworn to protect.

Dristan of Blackmore, champion knight of King Henry II, has a reputation to uphold as the Devil’s Dragon. After his invading army conquers Berwyck castle, he sets out to manage the newly claimed estate by training its knight in the art of proper defense. At first, everything appears as it should be, or is it? Betrayed by those he believed he could trust, he must first set aside his anger before he can make room in his heart for love.

Together they are tied by an unspoken bond. As they begin to rebuild the land and unite their people, forces beyond their control attempt to tear apart their fragile truce and only time will tell if love will forever bring them together.

Happy First Kiss Friday and welcome to my blog. I know this is a bit late but its never too late for a first kiss scene! Since I’m celebrating this week my release of Promises Made at Midnight, it seem only right to show you the first kiss scene. Happy reading, my lovelies, and enjoy!

Excerpt:

“You came,” she whispered in a breathy tone and she at once realized how fast her heart was hammering away inside her chest. She was excited and scared all at the same time while she tilted her head back to see his face. She felt so tiny next to this giant of a man, who must be well over six feet tall.

“Aye.”

Bridgette searched his face, waiting for more of a reply but he appeared unsure of himself and that was entirely out of character of the man she had come to know.

“You didn’t want to?” she couldn’t help herself from asking.

“I am uncertain if this is wise, Lady Bridgette. Lord Dristan…”

She placed her fingertips on his mouth. “Let me worry about Lord Dristan,” she replied, stepping closer.

His brow rose at her statement. “You have no idea what you are asking of me when I defy my liege lord by being alone here with you.”

“I just wanted some time with just the two of us, Ulrick. Is that too much to ask?” She took hold of his arms, and he placed his hands gently on her waist. “I promise I won’t bite… much.”

She gave him what she hoped was a wicked wink. A deep chuckle erupted from him, and his smile brightened her whole mood.

“I hardly know what to reply after such a comment. You are a feisty one, to be sure, Lady Bridgette.”

“I just know what I want,” she replied with a sincere heart.

“And what is that exactly?” he asked pulling her fully into his body.

“You have to ask?” She moved her palms to rest on his chest. One hand continued upward until she fingers brushed over the back of his head feeling the softness of his hair before settling on his neck. She began a gentle message with small circular motions and heard a soft moan escape him.

“Aye,” came a strained reply.

“You are a man of little words sometimes. Do you know that?”

“If I am going to be damned for my actions, then I must needs know your mind. What do you want, Bridgette?” He asked, again ignoring her comment, but she could tell that whatever control he was briefly holding onto where she was concerned, it was about to break.

“What do I want? You… I want you, Ulrick” She let her answer linger in the space between them, but she didn’t have to wait long for his nonverbal reply.

His arms tighten around her waist, lifting her up and bringing them chest to chest. And in that one brief moment, their heartbeats fused as one. As she stared up into those mesmerizing blue-grey eyes, the reflection from the stars above were twinkling in their depths. Her gaze was drawn to the sensual chiseled lines of his mouth. His lips turned up with a slow roguish grin before swooping down to take full possession of her. A gasp of surprise gave him what he wanted when his tongue dipped inside her mouth to dance with her own while their bodies all but melted together as one. She lost all thought of anything else but this man who claimed her. Bridgette had released Ulrick from whatever restraints he had been holding onto and she was delighted he was equally moved to finally share their first kiss.

A hushed moan escaped her when his lips moved from her mouth to place a trail of soft kisses as he went from her cheek to her neck. His teeth nibbled at the lobe of her ear and the warmth of his breath was almost her undoing.

Taking hold of his cheeks, she all but demanded another kiss in her attempts to take back control of their moment together. But who was she kidding? She lost any attempt of self-control the moment Ulrick stepped through the turret portal.

Their kiss continued for several more minutes—an exploration of two missing souls who had finally found one another. It was as binding as if they had already promised themselves an eternity together… at least in Bridgette’s mind.

Promises Made At Midnight:
The Knights of Berwyck, A Quest Through Time (Book 6)

Sometimes all it takes to find your heart’s desire is to make a wish…

After a series of failed relationships, Bridgette Harris would like a fresh start. If only she could escape her ex-boyfriend since they participate in the same renaissance fairs. While gazing at a granite statue of a handsome knight—her dream man—at one such fair, a mysterious elderly Scottish woman offers her a coin to toss into the fountain and make a wish. Bridgette can’t resist, but nothing prepares her to suddenly slip through time.

Sir Ulrick de Mohan does not have time for love. He is charged with training possible recruits to become worthy guardsmen for the Devil’s Dragon. The woman who magically appears out of thin air and falls into his arms must be one of those future ladies who continue to show up at Berwyck’s gate. But she can’t be for him.

Fate has brought two people together despite the centuries that should be keeping them apart. Will the growing love between them be enough to keep Bridgette in the past or will Time return her to where she should belong?
