Be My Guest, De Wolfe Pack Connected World, First Kiss Friday, Historical Romance, Medieval Romance, New Release, Romance

Welcome to another First Kiss Friday, my lovelies! Todays guest is author Ruth Kaufman who has an excerpt from her recently release story My Rival, My Love: De Wolfe Pack Connected World. We hope you enjoy this first kiss scene! Happy reading.

Excerpt:

“Good, sir, do I have your permission to get my hopes up now?” she asked.

“You do.”

They laughed. The first true laugh of his she’d heard. She loved the carefree sound.

Caught up in the moment, they hugged. Having his body against hers and his arms around her back, felt so good. So right.

She relished the tender moment, but knew she should pull away. They’d clung together longer than a congratulatory embrace should last. As she leaned back, he met her gaze. She knew that look. The burn of desire. And couldn’t deny she shared it.

Slowly, he bent his head. All she had to do was take a single step out of his arms. But she didn’t want to. She wanted him to kiss her. To keep the pressure of his hard body against hers and his strong arms holding her close.

And to be desired by him, even for just this moment.

Their lips met.

“Cecily,” he said softly.

His tone, his touch, made her thirst for more.

She slid her hands into his hair as the kiss deepened. Pulsing warmth spread between her legs. He’d awakened desires she’d thought long dead. As when spring brought the earth back to life, her body felt eager to flourish. But the more she cared, the more she could lose if he didn’t want more. Or if he did and some dire fate befell him.

Each let go and backed away.

Despite their differences, Cecily liked Simon too much. The rush of emotions was more intense than she wanted. How could she lessen their growing intimacy?

The warmth lingering in his gaze intrigued and confused her.

Blurb:

Their hearts are locked as tightly as his box. Can her key open them to love?

York, England 1460 – A letter containing a key leads Cecily Fayrefax to intriguing goldsmith Simon Clarke, who owns a locked box. Attraction sparks as they unite in a quest to open it.

Cecily fears caring for another man because her husband died in a tragic fire, yet finds herself drawn to Simon even as she struggles to stand her ground when they clash over disposition of the mystifying contents. Accustomed to being in charge, he needs to learn how to have a woman, and an alluring one at that, as a partner while keeping up with his business.

After danger threatens, each is more convinced of being right and remains wary of allowing desire to sway important choices. Can love show them how to agree to disagree?

First Kiss Friday with R.L. Merrill

Be My Guest, Romance

Today for First Kiss Friday, I’d like to welcome back my dear friend, R.L. Merrill who will share an excerpt from her upcoming novel. Happy reading, my lovelies, and take it away, Ro!

Happy October! It’s the Most Wonderful Time Of The Year for weirdos like me and I thought I’d share a little First Kiss snippet from my upcoming funny paranormal release Ghoul Me Once, out October 21st!

A little background… Last summer I received a message from one of my heroes in the writery business, Robyn Peterman. She invited me to write a book in her Magic and Mayhem Universe and the resulting book, Shifted, came out in June. I introduced my characters Louis and Maggie into her world of Assjacket, West Virginia and many hijinks ensued. The pair are Intervention Specialists from the Afterlife and in Shifted they were ordered to bring together a mute water witch named Layla with wonky magic and a hexed gator Shifter Garrett Cocodri, on the run from his past. In book two, Layla and Garrett have new responsibilities, including caring for Garrett’s childhood best friend Johann, who’s in quite a predicament. In this excerpt, Johann has found a kindred soul in Garrett’s cousin Clarabelle and they’re out stargazing in her secret magical garden.

Excerpt:

Johann had been feeling safe and secure in their little corner of the garden, but the bigger picture started to hit him.

“Clarabelle, I’m sorry if my being here has made things more complicated for you. I don’t want to be a burden on you. You seem like you already have your hands full.”

“No, no. That’s not what I meant. I just meant…it’s been hard, maybe a little lonely, but things are looking up.” She lifted her gaze to his and gave him a lazy, welcoming smile.

He felt her breath on his cheek.

The longing he experienced in that moment was far more potent than anything in his life—

He pulled back quickly and put distance between them.

He took a breath for courage.

“Clarabelle? I cannot thank you enough for all you’ve done for me, but I have to know…why? Why would you help me? Why share your secret garden with me? I’m a monster.”

Clarabelle looked down at their hands and sighed. “Maybe because I saw in you a fellow outsider. Maybe because you looked as though you’d lost your best friend in the world and I know that feeling. Maybe because…”

Before Johann knew what was happening, she’d pressed her lips to his in a kiss that was revelatory. Clarabelle’s lips tasted like a promise, like a wish come true, like the answer to his prayers.

He took a chance and threaded his fingers into her hair, pulling her closer, deepening the kiss. She smiled against his lips and tangled her leg with his while clutching at the shirt she’d loaned him.

When he heard fabric tear, he pulled back.

Now she was the one looking mighty hungry. She seemed to realize it at the same time as Johann, and her eyes went wide.

“I’m sorry. I gotta go. Stay here? I’ll, um…see you tonight?”

She scrambled up off the ground and ran for the house, not once looking back.

And if Johann wasn’t completely losing it, it appeared she was pulling off her dress as the back door opened.

***

Stupid hormones!

Clarabelle got tangled in her dress as she tried to yank it off. She sped through the house, the dress covering her face, and just before she reached the door, she ran into something hard. A laughing something hard.

“What in the hell are you doing?”

She yanked the dress back down so she could see and found Beau standing in front of her.

“I need to shift,” she said through clenched teeth. “Move!”

He chuckled and started to move, but he wasn’t fast enough. She shifted into her gator right there in the living room, tearing her dress.

Beau’s laughter and taunts followed her as she attempted to make a break for it, heading for the water. “Now who’s wreckin’ their clothes, huh, sis?”

Grrr, she was going to clobber him when she came back.

For now, she needed to swim. She needed to clear her mind.

She needed to cool her jets.

What the heck had she been about to do? She kissed Johann!

#BellesInBlue, Be My Guest, Caroline Warfield, Romance

It’s always a pleasure when I can welcome back my dear friend Caroline Warfield to another First Kiss Friday! The Unexpected Wife is a finalist for a RONE award this week. It seems like a good time to redo the first kiss in that wonderful book. If you’ve read it and like it, please vote for it today through Sunday at https://www.indtale.com/2019-rone-awards-week-three

Before this scene, Charles, the Duke of Murnane, has gone missing inside the city of Canton, forbidden to foreigners, for three days, while Zambak is confined to the American factory in the Western quarter, frightened for him. He can offer her no respectable future because his horrid wife stands in the way. How that issue resolves itself is honest, meaningful, and touching.

Excerpt:

One other thing took shape and came into focus so sharply she couldn’t turn away. She loved Charles Wheatly, heart and soul. A desperate laugh, half sob, half hysteria escaped her at the thought. She finally fulfilled her mother’s fondest wish and found a man she could respect and love—one that offered little hope of a respectable future. She had no idea what to do with the thought. As it turned out she had little time to consider it.

“Who is here?” Charles demanded. He stood outlined in the light from oil lamps in the corridor behind him. Caught between love and fury over the fear he caused, she flung herself from the chair.

“Thank God!” She didn’t know whether she would hug him or slap him until she threw herself into his arms and was being kissed senseless.

He pulled his lips from hers and kissed his way down her neck. “What is this foolishness?” he asked against a tender spot beneath her right ear. His gentle hands began to roam.

She captured his mouth again, invading before he could object. “Where have you been?” she asked between moans of pleasure, “Don’t ever frighten me like that again.”

He shifted and pulled her closer, kissed her more deeply. She felt one of his hands, warm against her skin, slip under her lose jacket.

Zambak melted against him, but reality intruded as the initial heat subsided. “You stink!” She pulled back a few inches, his arms still holding her, and wrinkled her nose.

“I slept behind a tannery last night, in an alley ridden with some dubious substances. I meant to clean up before reporting to you.”

She pulled away reluctantly, one hand clinging to his, and picked up a candle from his bedside to light it from one of the oil lamps in the hall. She looked him up and down with disgust, put the candle down, and began undoing the heavy robe. “Let’s get you undressed,” she said setting words to action.

“Lady Zambak Hayden how inappropriate—and how utterly delightful,” he said allowing her to have her way with him. The outer robe hit the floor and she kicked it to the corner. She began undoing the fasteners on his shirt, but he brushed her hands aside and pulled it over his head. “I’ve ordered a bath, will you help me with that too?”

Heat surged through her at the image he conjured. Her face burned momentarily, but the sight of the seeping bandage on his arm sent ice water through her. “My God, Charles, you’re hurt!”

“It probably needs to be looked at, but I wanted to clean up first.”

She unwound the filthy strip of cloth, cringing at the seeping wound running almost the length of his upper arm. “Cow slop! This can’t wait. You spent the night in filth.” She punched his shoulder then.

“Ow! What was that for?”

“Stupidity. This could fester and I’ll have to fear for you all over again.”

The Unexpected Wife
Children of Empire Book 3

Crushed with grief after the death of his son, Charles Wheatly, Duke of Murnane, throws himself into the new Queen’s service in 1838. When the government sends him on an unofficial fact finding mission to the East India Company’s enclave in Canton, China, he anticipates intrigue, international tensions, and an outlet for his frustration. He isn’t entirely surprised when he also encounters a pair of troublesome young people that need his help. However, the appearance of his estranged wife throws the entire enterprise into conflict. He didn’t expect to face his troubled marriage in such an exotic locale, much less to encounter profound love at last in the person of a determined young woman. Tensions boil over, and his wife’s scheming—and the beginnings of the First Opium War—force him to act to rescue the one he loves and perhaps save himself in the process.

Zambak Hayden seethes with frustration. A woman her age has occupied the throne for over a year, yet the Duke of Sudbury’s line of succession still passes over her—his eldest—to land on a son with neither spine nor character. She follows her brother, the East India Company’s newest and least competent clerk, to protect him and to safeguard the family honor. If she also escapes the gossip and intrigues of London and the marriage mart, so much the better. She has no intention of being forced into some sort of dynastic marriage. She may just refuse to marry at all. When an old family friend arrives she assumes her father sent him. She isn’t about to bend to his dictates nor give up her quest. Her traitorous heart, however, can’t stop yearning for a man she can’t have.

Neither expects the epic historical drama that unfolds around them.

Be My Guest, Christmas, Contemporary, Holiday, Romance

It’s First Kiss Friday, my lovelies! Please welcome my friend and fellow San Francisco Area of Romance Writers of America chapter member Beth Barany. Beth is sharing an excerpt from A Cupcake Christmas. Be sure to read all the way to the end about her giveaway. Happy reading and enjoy!

Excerpt:

“Kate took his hand and let Florian bring her to standing. She wasn’t surprised by the sparks that flowed from him into her, she welcomed them, in fact. He still hadn’t answered her question.

“Shall we stroll?” He tucked her hand into the crook of his arm, in an old-fashioned charming way. They were shoulder to shoulder.

“To the van?” She shivered at their closeness.

“If you like.” He gazed into her eyes.

“I like.” If her voice sounded husky, she didn’t mind.

Florian grinned. She could swear his eyes twinkled but maybe it was the light of the restaurant or of the sky. Dusk was falling. Low sunlight reflected off the fog hovering above them. Kate walked back with him, arm in arm, to her van parked behind the kitchen a block away. There they stood in the cold foggy night.

He smiled down at her. “Still want me to come by to practice the magic show?”

She never really paid attention to their height difference. Maybe because she was a few inches taller in her work shoes and hadn’t noticed. Now, she was in her flats and the top of her head came to just above his nose, which had a light dusting of freckles to go with his shock of red, wavy hair.

“Yes, I’d feel better about Saturday.” She stared at his lips.

“Did you want to go over the schedule too?”

She nodded and leaned closer to him. “I should.”

“But what do you want to do?” he said softly and stepped closer to her.

Somewhere a horn honked. She blinked and gazed into his sparkling green eyes. “I want—” You, I want you to stay, she wanted to say.

He searched her eyes, waiting.

“To have a—” She shook her head. No, she didn’t want a fling. But she wanted him, something more meaningful.

He leaned a little closer. “A cupcake nightcap? I know, a wine cupcake.”

“I like how you think.” She laughed and kissed him on the lips. Just a brief kiss. He was delicious—sweet and alluring.

He leaned in to deepen the kiss, but she pulled away. “Come on. Let’s walk to my place. It’s not far.” She stepped toward the street.

But Florian didn’t follow. He chuckled. “You’re a bit of a tease.”

“I don’t mean to be,” she said quietly, turned toward him, and held out her hand.

He took her hand. “I know.” He cleared his throat. “You keep the van here overnight?”

“It’s safe. There are cameras in the lot.”

“Will they catch us doing this?” Florian leaned in to land a kiss on her lips. Her insides warmed. She kissed him back. He tasted sweeter than the chocolate shake they’d shared for desert.

She laughed. “I think the cameras have had enough of a show. Let’s go.”

It took twice as long to walk the fifteen minutes to her apartment. They had to stop every few minutes for more kisses. She felt warm all over, as if she were enveloped in the softest comforter.

They made it up the two flights of stairs without stopping too many times. When she opened the door to her apartment, she felt breathless with the kissing and how he made her laugh with his suggestions for ridiculous cupcake recipes, each one more silly than the next, and jokes about putting on a show for the whole neighborhood.

They stumbled into her front hallway of her one-bedroom apartment. She shut the door behind them and then pulled Florian toward her. “I want to kiss you without walking,” she said into his neck. She inhaled his wonderful scent of man and cinnamon. She was burning up and couldn’t wriggle out of her coat fast enough. He helped her, and then leaned in for a long, deep kiss that had her sighing and reaching to slip off his coat. She caressed his strong back muscles under his shirt and sighed some more.

When they finally came up for air, he asked, “Don’t you want to practice for the party?”

“I want to practice a much more ancient art.” She nuzzled his neck and smoothed her hands on his chest, his strong chest, and over his strong muscular arms. He kept himself in good shape. Must be all that lifting and stirring. Too bad he still had his shirt on.

“You sure, Kate?”

“I want you, Florian. I want to be with you.” She pulled back to look in his eyes. “I trust you. I know you’re ready for the kid’s party. I was just stressing out.”

He gazed into her eyes. She thought she saw a flicker of doubt or worry, but she couldn’t be sure, because then she saw nothing but adoration. He smiled. “I want you, too, Kate. Very much.”

She kissed him and pulled him toward her bedroom. “Let’s get practicing.” She hadn’t asked him to stay and he hadn’t reminded her he was leaving. At least they had now.

#BellesInBlue, Be My Guest, Contemporary, First Kiss Friday, Romance

It’s First Kiss Friday and today’s guest is fellow Bluestocking Belle, Lizzie Tremayne. Lizzi is sharing the first kiss scene from her Contemporary novel, Once Upon a Vet School. Be sure to leave her a comment to be in the running for her giveaway. Happy reading, my lovelies, and take it away Lizzi!

Hello! Thanks for coming by today, and thank you, Sherry, for having me here!

Once Upon a Vet School #7: Lena Takes a Foal.

Did you ever want to become a veterinarian? Didn’t quite get there?

Now you can live it with Once Upon a Vet School—tales of a girl who dreamed of becoming a vet… her life on the way and beyond.

Once Upon a Vet School is a new series of contemporary veterinary fiction. Share Lena’s escapades, and that of some of her classmates, from the time they decide to become veterinarians, through their education and practice time in the USA, to their careers, Lena’s as a rural equine and sometimes zoo-dentistry veterinarian in New Zealand.

In my excerpt, life had been going from bad to worse for my heroine, Lena, and she’d finally spilled the beans to Kit, her veterinary school resident… who was also something more.

He was about to become something more, anyway!

I’m giving away a digital copy of Once Upon a Vet School #7: Lena Takes a Foal, Book Seven of The Once Upon a Vet School series.

We pick up our story as Kit is holding Lena close, her tears flowing…

Excerpt:

I stared at him, then slapped my jaw shut.

“I can’t believe you’d do that. Not you,” I argued.

“I may not have abandoned her for another woman, but I abandoned her nonetheless… for my practice, my clients, my patients. I was there for them… always… but never for her.” He swallowed hard, his jaw locked tight. I took a deep breath and held it, then let it out slowly. “So, with nothing left, I came back… back to the place I loved the most, where horses were king and caring for them could be my life… without hurting anyone else… or letting anyone in that could hurt me. It was easier just not to feel…” He stopped and looked down at me. “And then you come along.”

“Me?”

“You. You with those sea green eyes…”

“Same as yours,” I whispered.

“Same as mine,” he agreed. “I tried to leave you alone, stay away… but…” He closed his eyes for a moment.

“Me too.”

“And so, you see, I find I want someone to care again… and I want to care about someone… you, specifically. I fought it, damned if I didn’t try to keep you away, keep you at arm’s length, but you kept coming back for more… your desire to help horses… it was like a drug to me.”

I swallowed hard. I wanted it so much, but…

But what?

My memory of why I shouldn’t get involved with anyone was fading fast.

“I’d always wanted to do a surgery residency here…” Kit hesitated, “and now I’m here and almost done, it’s not nearly enough. I want to stay, permanently, to teach… get on a tenure track, become a professor.”

“You’ll be the best they’ve ever had.” He let out his breath in a snort.

“Hardly,” he gave me a soft smile, “but I’d like to think I could at least make a difference to a lot of horses and students.”

“You already do that,” I said, and leaned harder against his solid chest. “And you’re easy to talk to.”

“And you understand how I feel about horses.”

I tried to look away, but his eyes drew me back.

“But we can’t…” It came out on a sob, wrenched from me, unwillingly. “I’m a student, you’re faculty.”

“There are no written rules on that, by the way,” he said, with a twist of his lips. “I checked.”

“But it couldn’t help your chances with the faculty — it would be ‘frowned upon’…and the way I see it, you’ll need every point in your favor — plenty of people want tenure here.”

“And, as others would say, and maybe they’re right, I’m too old and you’re too young,” he said, with a wistful smile.

“That’s not true, actually,” I said. “You’re over ten years younger than my last fiancé.”

He blinked.

“Seriously?”

I nodded.

“And…” I whispered, “the third argument, I don’t want to get hurt anymore.”

“That makes two of us.”

“You’ll never get that professorship, though, if you hang around with students, much less sleep with them,” I said flatly, and turned my head away. “I don’t want to wreck your chances.”

“I’m beginning to think it doesn’t matter… as much as this…” Kit turned my chin toward him with the side of his finger, then lowered his lips to mine.

I could have fallen into his warm lips, his touch… and I let it happen. I returned his kiss with all the feeling I’d kept hidden for so long.

“So…” I said, panting a bit, when he finally let me breathe again.

“What are we going to do about it, you mean?”

“Yes,” I said. My firm tone came out as more of a breathy whisper.

“Well, first, we’re going to get you over this fear of foaling.”

I gulped and the chill started up in my guts again.

“Hold on, there. It’ll be okay. Just hold on. Again, you were how old? And had how much veterinary training?”

“Fifteen, no training.”

“Think about this, with your head and not your emotions. Is that reasonable?”

“Y — no,” I said, and the tears began to fall again. “But my heart, it just…locks up and I can’t breathe, or think.”

“We’ll fix all that. Deal? I help you do that and you help me fix my heart and learn to trust again?” He was silent for a moment. “Maybe you can start learning to trust again too, eh?”

“That’s a big ask, with my history, but — ”

“— deal?” he cut in.

“Deal.”

I turned my face up to his and we kissed again. He leaned back against the wall, holding me tightly in his arms.

The warmth, the closeness, the safety.

I wanted it to go on forever.

But nothing lasts — I stopped myself.

Why not? Why not you?

That blasted little voice again.

I focused on Kit’s eyes. For the first time ever, no vagueness — or had it been avoidance? — showed in their depths. His green eyes were nearly black, intense, close before me.

I froze as a flash of green — a figure in surgical scrubs — showed, silhouetted, in the doorway behind Kit’s head.

About the story:

She needs help… he needs to stay away…

Lena’s got a problem–one that might prevent her from graduating. When her horse flips over and lands on her, it has to be the dashing resident, Kit, who finds her. Luckily, she’s sworn off relationships after her last debacle and sea-green eyes and rugged good looks are the last things on her mind. Besides, to a veterinary school faculty, relationships between residents and students are like oil and water; they just don’t mix.

Be My Guest, Contemporary, Jasmine Haynes, Romance

It’s another First Kiss Friday and not only do I have the pleasure to welcome back my friend Jasmine Haynes but we also get to help celebrate her newest book baby. Today’s excerpt from Any Way She Wants It is the latest book in Jasmine’s West Coast Series. I’ve already grabbed my copy and we hope you’ll do the same. Get out your fan… lets turn up the heat and give a warm welcome to Jasmine!

Thank you, Sherry, you know how much I love your First Kiss Friday blog! And it’s a pleasure to be here with you again!

So Tricia and David in Any Way She Wants It have a history from way back when she was sixteen. And now they’re working at the same company over twenty years later. Tricia is divorced and David is a widower, and sparks about to fly! And the title comes from that fabulous old Journey song, Any Way You Want It, which happens to still be one of my favorites!

Excerpt:

“Just let it go, Tricia.” He wanted to beg, but he was afraid he’d start begging for something else entirely.

Why had she come back into his life to torment him? Wasn’t his wife’s death enough? There was only so much guilt a man could take before it crushed him.

Her eyes went soft, and she shook her head at him gently as if he were a poor misguided fool. “I haven’t let it go for over twenty years, David. I don’t know why you think I’m going to now. Unless you give me a really good reason.” She rose, picked up her papers, stuffed them in a folder, and headed for the door.

He felt sliced right down the middle, ecstatic that she intended to let it alone for now, and aching that she was leaving him. He pushed back from the table, that hair-brained part of him wanting to rush after her. But he didn’t stand. His fears and his guilt kept him bolted to the chair.

But she turned, setting her file on the bookcase by the side of the door, her hand on the door knob as she stood outlined in the frame. “Do you remember what you told me that night?”

He swallowed, barely restraining himself from running his finger around his collar as if his tie were too tight. “Uh…not really.” Most of what he remembered was physical, sensory, tactile, her mouth, her scent, her skin, her tears.

“You told me to demand what I wanted. Never to let a man get away with pleasing himself and not me.”

Yes, that he remembered. He’d wanted her to demand her pleasure. Because men could be selfish or clueless or just plain stupid. But he didn’t answer her aloud.

She closed the door. The lock clicked, the sound like a shout in the quiet office.

“I’ve decided to demand what I want. From you. Right now.” She advanced on him.

He couldn’t have moved if the fire alarm started screeching or an earthquake shook down the office walls. There was her black skirt, her slightly sheer blouse, and those mind-blowing red shoes. He could barely breathe. She leaned down, hands on the armrests of his chair, her scent spellbinding him.

“I want that night all over again,” she whispered. “Maybe I’ll be satisfied if I can have it just once more. Maybe I can get you out of my system.

If he gave in, he would never get her out of his system. He’d be lost. He’d be—

She hiked her skirt and climbed on top of him, fitting her slim legs down the sides of the armrests, along his thighs. Her heat surrounded him. He should have pushed her off, forced himself to surface above the beguiling aroma of woman and sex, above his needs and desires. But he couldn’t move.

Then she cupped his face in her palms. “Kiss me. Like you did back then. Tell me what you told me then.”

He couldn’t resist her, succumbing to what he’d dreamed about for so long. He didn’t even put up a token battle, dropping his voice to match her whisper, replaying the night. “You’re so damn beautiful. Don’t let anyone ever tell you you’re not good enough.” He wiped the tears from beneath her eyes as if she were crying. She’d always compared herself to his sister Judy, and always failed to measure up. In her mind, Judy was the pretty one, the popular one. The two of them had gone to some neighborhood party, and Tricia had overheard a boy say he could only kiss her if she put a bag over her head. Her self-confidence had been decimated.

She was nothing like that fragile girl now.

But that night, after the party, afraid she’d wake Judy—Tricia was always at their house—she’d come to the living room to hide her tears.

She’d found him sitting in the dark, watching TV with the sound off.

“Kiss me, David,” she begged him now, just as she had then. “Show me I’m pretty enough to be kissed.”

He gave in completely. To her and to his own dreams.

Jesus, she tasted better than memory, like hot, sexy, sensuous, experienced woman, so different and yet so much the same. Hands on her hips, he pulled her tight, her hot center riding him.

He was gone in two seconds flat. Lost. And he devoured her, taking her tongue, diving deep, fulfilling twenty-two years of fantasy. He kissed her until he was lightheaded with need, his hands all over her, thighs, breasts, tangling in her hair.

“You didn’t kiss me like that, David.”

He wasn’t sure how he’d let go long enough for her to pull back and whisper those beguiling words to him.

“It was different,” was his only excuse. And she was different, not the young girl who’d never had her first real kiss. Back then, he’d wanted only to show her that there would be so many more kisses for her in the future.

“Do you want me?” And she completely seduced him with the question.

Any Way She Wants It Blurb

He was engaged to be married.
She was his sister’s best friend and his dirty little secret.
Twenty years later, it’s all about to explode.

David Farris has been a widower for almost a year. He should have been able to handle Tricia Connelly walking back into his life. After all, it’s been over twenty years. But now that she’s here, she’s the embodiment of his greatest desire…and his worst guilt. Keeping everything between them strictly business is the only way to preserve his sanity.

Tricia wants nothing more than to make David totally crazy with need for her. When she realizes they’ll be working side-by-side, day in and day out, her heart clamors for this second chance to make the one man she’s always wanted fall for her. But David can’t let go of the past.

Her only choice is to seduce him with steamy kisses and delicious caresses to show him how perfect they could be for each other.

Can David forgive his past sins? Or will he sacrifice their future?

First Kiss Friday with my guest Kilby Blades

Be My Guest, First Kiss Friday, Romance

On today’s First Kiss Friday I’d like to welcome my guest Kilby Blades who is a member of my local Romance Writers of America chapter. I think your going to enjoy this excerpt from her novel, Snapdragon. Now I’m off to go order the book! Happy reading, my lovelies!

Excerpt:

“You want the truth?”

“I always want the truth.”

Trepidation crossed his face. He took a breath before he spoke again.

“The truth is, I like you. I think you’re the kind of girl I’d like to have dinner with and take to social functions. I think we’d have more good conversation, some fun times, and sizzling hot sex.”

He paused long enough to measure her reaction. In the dark, he wouldn’t have been able to see the goosebumps that prickled her flesh.

“But I don’t need to start something with you to know how it’ll end. Experience has taught me that women are biologically incapable of having unattached relationships. Since I’m too busy for the kind of commitment they want, I go without. I’d rather do that than lead them on.”

Darby let out a measured breath. “Wow, that was…” presumptuous, she wanted to say. Though he delivered them gently, his words still cut.

“I know my share of women who are obsessed with getting a man to commit,” she returned in the same tone. “But your broad categorization of women is short-sighted.” And borderline sexist. “If you think there aren’t plenty of single women who want to stay that way, you are mistaken. My parents’ marriage was a disaster, and the idea of emulating that repulses me. Despite all you’ve heard about biological clocks and maternal instincts, not all women have them. I have a career I love that has me working just as many hours as you do. The last thing I need is to come home after a hard day to somebody who is biologically incapable of not needing his ego stroked.”

She didn’t let on how much she was enjoying watching the widening of his eyes, the subtle slacking of his jaw. “And because I can’t find a man who wants nothing more than to give me four toe curling orgasms twice a week and then get the hell out of my house…”

She saw the bob of his Adam’s apple and was dying to know what other reactions she may have caused.

“Do you honestly expect me to believe that you can’t find a guy who only wants to have sex with you? Because I don’t believe that.”

His voice was so low that it wiped out any doubt that the attraction was mutual.

“I expect you to believe girls like me have only two options: one-night stands and Romeos. I don’t do one-night stands because the world is full of psychopaths who like doing bad things to pretty girls. And I stay away from Romeos because I find it insulting to watch someone go through the pomp and circumstance of ”dating” me because he thinks that’s what it’ll take for me to sleep with him.”

By the time she finished, she noted a change in his expression and wondered whether her words had triggered something. Men could be fragile, especially the better looking ones.

“So, paint me a picture of someone who’s different.” Her body hummed with the awareness of how quickly their conversation was leaving the realm of the hypothetical. “How would that someone come into your life?” he implored.

“It’s complicated.”

For Darby, there could be no innocent flirtations, no absent minded affairs, no tawdry trysts. Her father was a public figure, and she had her own respectable career to protect. She wasn’t like every other woman her age who could take to Tinder every time she wanted a good time.

“I like complex things.”

His breath near her ear made her tingle, and she had to concentrate to calm her voice lest it betray her emotions.

“He couldn’t be a complete stranger. I’d have to meet him someplace safe and know that I could trust him.” Saying it felt strange. As if she were creating a different persona. As if she were pretending some alternative could exist. “And there’d have to be a real attraction,” she added.

“What else?”

“He’d respect me enough to be honest about our arrangement and respect himself enough to be mature, conscientious, and discreet about the whole thing.” She took a shaky breath. “And I, uh…wasn’t kidding about the orgasms, either. They need to be toe-curling and there’d need to be at least four, every time we…”

He closed his eyes for a moment too long for it to be a blink. Darby wondered what he was imagining.

“What about you?” she said finally. “If you could find a woman who was different, how would things be?”

He took his time to answer, his eyes focused toward the water. Before he did, he turned back to her with a look of halting intensity. She sensed that he wanted to be honest, though his deep blue eyes reserved an ocean of secrets. It only made him more intriguing. As a psychiatrist it was her job to read people, but she couldn’t read him fully.

“I want a woman who doesn’t confuse me loving her company with me being in love with her. She has to know that whatever we have today may not be there tomorrow, not because I’m heartless or distant or incapable of intimacy—but because right now, I choose my career, and my love isn’t in play—only my companionship.”

“I need a woman who’s prepared for the fact that what we share won’t feel transactional. It will feel intimate and intense, because I only spend time with women I genuinely like and because I take pride in doing things well. She needs to know that me showing her respect and treating her like a lady and making her feel worshipped has nothing to do with her being more special to me than a good friend and everything to do with my idea of how a woman deserves to be treated.”

He put down his empty champagne flute, placing it absently on the cushion next to him so that he could turn his body toward her.

“She’d have to understand that it’s never more than meets the eye—and that each of us is responsible to the other to break things off the second things get too complicated. And she has to be prepared for what’s inevitable. Because the end will come, Darby. Even if it doesn’t get complicated, I’ll make partner one day, or get transferred halfway around the world, or maybe even go to work for another firm. And my job comes first. It just…does.”

They held hands all the way back up the beach, feet sinking into the sand as the foamy surf lapped at their ankles. Words seemed unnecessary—perhaps enough had been said that night—but she was still disappointed to see the evening come to an end. The look he had given her when he had taken her hand hadn’t been gentlemanly. His small touches and glances were magnetic, and she thought about what it would be like to see him again.

When they separated at the steps to brush off sandy feet and put their shoes back on, Darby almost spoke, convinced she should say something before she lost her nerve. Instead, his arm came around her shoulders, the other sweeping her up behind her knees. She drew a breath as she felt him start to carry her up the steps.

“You didn’t think I was going to let you walk up a hundred steps in four-inch heels, did you?”

She felt the words vibrate as they formed in his chest, felt the solidity of his body beneath her. With her nose so close to his neck she could smell his skin, could easily inhale more of him. His fragrance was as complex as everything else about him. She wrapped her own arms around him, and leaned her head against his shoulder. Strong arms hadn’t held her in a very long time.

They reached the top far too quickly and she was sorry when he gently set her down. Before they untangled themselves from each other’s arms, he leaned in for a soft but thorough kiss. His thumbs caressed her cheeks as his tongue massaged hers with such expertise that she knew instantly that he’d be incredible at certain other things.

“What if I promised you five?” He pulled away only long enough to ask the question and fix her with a hawkish gaze before leaning in for seconds. “Would you see me if I promised you five?” He asked again only after he’d gently devoured her mouth once more.

“Lofty goal, Don’t you think?” she murmured against his chin, not waiting for an answer before capturing his lips once again.

“I’m an overachiever,” he said darkly as he pulled back. “Six?” He nipped at her neck.

She might have laughed at his bravado if kissing him hadn’t felt so good, and had his voice held any of the humor that should have accompanied such a ridiculous dare, yet his voice held no mirth. The idea was ludicrous—six orgasms? Even the four she’d mentioned had been an exaggeration. Still, a stab of anticipatory pleasure tingled up her spine as she realized this talented man might just deliver.

“This ends at sunrise,” she managed, still out of breath as she pulled away long enough to say the words.

“I thought you didn’t do one-night stands.”

“It’s not a one-night stand. It’s an interview.”

Snapdragon Blurb

The rules are simple: unattached companionship, toe-curling sex and a clean break whenever it ends. Darby’s groundbreaking medical research will launch her to career stardom. Michael’s status as an architectural wunderkind will send him to a far-flung locale. Either one can say the single word that will break it off: Snapdragon.

Fascination…

Tripping over a fallen log, Fiona fell flat on her face. “Ouch!”

At once, strong arms pulled her up. His face so close, she could see the dimple in his chin beneath the shadow of his beard. Yet, it was those lips that caught her attention—full and sensual. Lips that could devour a woman. A slight tremor ran down her spine.

Releasing her, he backed away.

“Thanks,” she mumbled. What is wrong with you, Fiona? Did you hit your head?

He drew forth his dirk. “Hold your arms out.”

Confused, Fiona complied. In one swift slice, he cut through her bonds. Rubbing at her wrists, she smiled up at him. “Thank you…again.”

Welcome to another First Kiss Friday. It’s my extreme pleasure to welcome Kathryn Le Veque to my blog. Kathryn is sharing an excerpt from ShadowWolfe that releases on July 27th. Thank you Kathryn for being my guest today! Happy reading and enjoy.
KathrynLeVeque_ShadowWolfe_800
Excerpt:

Scott was standing over her, looking down at her head, the infant against her breast, and feeling his heart swell in ways he could hardly comprehend. He came around to the front of her, taking a knee and bringing himself to her eye level. The expression on his face was nothing short of raw as he gazed into her eyes.

“Swear it to me,” he breathed.

She nodded fervently. “I swear it.”

It was all Scott needed to hear. Those three words cemented something into his heart and soul that he would never again lose, cementing faith that he thought he’d lost. Faith that there would be happiness again in his life and faith that there was hope for the future. He thought he’d lost those feelings long ago, but Avrielle had somehow managed to bring them back. The realization nearly overwhelmed him.

As the babe nursed at her breast, Scott brought his hands up, cupping Avrielle’s sweet face. All he did was stare at her for a moment, feeling her soft flesh beneath his hands, hardly believing this moment was upon him. It didn’t seem real. Yet, Avrielle was very real in his hands, her skin warm and delicate in his palms, and those lips he’d admired from afar were calling to him.

This time, he answered the call.

His mouth slanted over hers, warm and gentle, as her scent filled his nostrils, intoxicating him. It was a defining moment for him because it spoke of untold promises, unspoken words, and a future he thought he’d lost. He could taste her sweetness upon his lips and he feasted on her, listening to her soft gasps of pleasure as he suckled her lips.

His kisses grew bolder, more demanding, but he knew this wasn’t the place for such things. This was only the beginning of what was to come and his mouth left hers, kissing her cheeks, her nose, her eyes, before moving down her neck. Gentle kisses rained over that beautiful neck and onto the swell of her beautiful breasts, feeling the soft and gentle skin against his lips.
