Elsie carefully balanced the tea service on the tray she carried up the stairs at The Queen’s Barque Inn. She had almost reached the top when the owner’s dog came bounding up behind her barking at her heels begging for attention.

“Not now, Hector,” Elsie said while the dog pranced around her feet. “Can’t you see that I’m busy?” The dog seemed to understand and took off for another part of the inn.

Busy! Busy didn’t even begin to describe what Elsie had been reduced to! She was a lady’s maid and not meant for the duties in the scullery, for goodness sake! But once they had arrived at the inn, Elsie had been overrun with chores after Miss Miranda de Courtenay had offered Elsie’s services. Mr. and Mrs. Brewster, who were the owners of the inn, had been more than grateful to have an extra set of hands to help with their overflowing guests who had also become stranded at the inn due to a storm.

It had taken Elsie a while to get accustomed to where everything was located since the inn was a labyrinth of confusing corridors connecting the entire inn and mismatched rooms with décor from every century of past years. You would have thought the builders would have put more planning into its construction but it appeared as though they added onto it over the years as the owners saw fit. And the cleaning! Why some rooms were so worn down they surely hadn’t seen a proper cleaning in years. Only the mice, rats, and spiders seemed to enjoy these rooms and obviously were not happy their messy domain had been ruined by busy maids.

Some rooms had been converted for the injured and Elsie had been reduced to collecting soiled bandages and used bedding to be laundered. She’d mopped and swept floors until she felt that she’d never stop sneezing from the accumulated dust that reached her nose. Finally, after a hot bath, she was now properly dressed and ready to take tea to Miss Miranda. Perhaps afterwards, she might be able to just go back to her room in the servant’s quarters and nap.

She continued down the second-floor corridor until she saw Charlotte Brewster, one of the owner’s daughters, peering down into one of the more presentable parlors of the Queen’s Barque Inn. At Elsie’s approached, Charlotte silently placed one finger over her mouth and nodded down. Elsie quietly stepped forward to view the scene. One elegantly dressed gentleman sat with two ladies who leaned forward and giggled in delight while he opened a newsprint and began to read.

Gentle Readers:

This just in from The Queen’s Barque in Fenwick on Sea!

Who was the fashionable damsel who entered the inn looking like a drenched field mouse, with no one else to give her countenance but her maid? None other but Miss d.C. Dedicated readers of The Teatime Tattler will be familiar with the escapades of this particular young miss. She has been a frequent piece of tittle-tattle in previous editions, barely escaped ruination in the past several years. There’s sure to be a bit of excitement while she’s stuck here.

Which of the several eligible peers also stranded at the inn will she set her cap on? We’ll just have to wait and see. Knowing her past, anything is possible. Stay tuned for further developments.

The gentleman finished and the ladies laughter echoed throughout the parlor. The tea service rattled in Elsie’s hand and when the group below began to look around, Charlotte quickly took Elsie’s elbow so they remained unseen by the nearby wall. Charlotte took the tray from Elsie while she attempted to catch her breath.

“Good heavens! How in the world did that rag learn Miss Miranda was here?” Elsie asked.

“The gentry aren’t the only ones who’ve been spreading the latest bit of gossip. My mum has had to reprimand more than one servant daily to keep their mouths shut whenever that newspaper gets delivered,” Charlotte said with a grimace. “You best make your way to your mistress without delay. She needs to learn that a reporter has somehow learned she’s in Fenwick on Sea.”

“It won’t be the first time her reputation has suffered because of gossip, but it hardly seems fair when this time all she’s doing is going to visit a friend,” Elise said with a frown before she realized she was telling a complete stranger Miss Miranda’s business. Elsie’s eyes widened with worry.

Charlotte gave her a small smile. “I understand,” she whispered before handing the tray back to Elsie. “I must be about the chores my mum has given me but know I won’t say a word about what we overheard.”

“Thank you,” Elsie nodded in gratitude hoping the young girl would be true to her word.

Charlotte left and Elsie took a deep breath before heading toward Miss Miranda’s room. She hesitated but an instant before she gave a short knock. At the call to enter, Elsie opened the door to view Miss Miranda sitting quietly reading a book. Elsie’s expression must have said much for Miss Miranda put the book down in her lap.

“What’s happened now?” she asked as though prepared for the worst.

Elsie placed the tray on a table then poured Miss Miranda a cup of tea, not that tea would actually calm the young lady after she learned she was once again the topic of the latest gossip. “I have news…”

Welcome to our Valentine’s Day Blog Hop. I’m so happy that you stopped by. Thank you, Ruth A. Casie, for sharing your book, Knight of Runes, and for offering a giveaway. Today I’m sharing a bit of flash fiction with my character Miss Miranda de Courtenay… but more about her story later in this post. Be sure to keep reading to find out what my giveaway is and don’t forget to comment here on my blog to go into the drawing for the Grand Prize of a gift card (US$75 value). So let’s get to that bit of flash fiction I promised you!

Miss Miranda de Courtenay entered the Assembly Rooms in Bath for a charity Valentine’s Day Ball. Her eyes surveyed the already crowded room while her brother-in-law took her pelisse.

“It’s quite the crush,” her sister Grace mentioned as she took Miranda’s elbow steering her towards the ballroom.

Miranda squeezed her sister’s arm, offering her a bright smile. “I’m just glad our brother at last forgave me for the part I played in his current state of wedded bliss and allowed me to attend.”

Grace laughed. “Adrian was just being stubborn, although I must admit you do tend to go a bit overboard in your quest for a title, Miranda.”

“Why should I be the only one in this family without a title?” she fumed before masking her face to not show how upset this particular conversation always made her. She had gone too far on one or two occasions, not that Gracie ever faulted her for her mishaps. “Besides, everyone could see how much Adrian and Celia were in love with one another. And before you say anything, Celia didn’t want the Marques. I thought to take advantage of the situation but it’s certainly not my fault he turned out to be a cad.”

Grace leaned forward to kiss Miranda’s cheek before whispering in her ear. “You were lucky to not have your heart involved with Wyndham, dearest sister. He was only a man with a title and obviously not husband material. Love will find you when the time is right. Perhaps try to not be so impatient and let Cupid find your mystery man when he’s ready to show you the way.”

“I could only be so lucky to stumble into someone like you did, Gracie,” Miranda said fondly knowing how happy her sister was with her second husband Nicholas.

Grace’s laughter burst forth. “I was lucky, wasn’t I?”

Before Miranda could respond, Nicholas came as if they conjured him up with a magic wand and swept Grace away to join the dancing. Miranda surveyed the room again trying to figure out her best options to pursue a possible relationship with one of the titled gentlemen who were present. There were plenty of men here that she had already been introduced to so that formality wouldn’t be a problem. She only needed to find someone who would be willing to forget her past mistakes since the two major ones she had made were public knowledge much to her regret.

She was thankful when she was asked to dance by a man she had met during the previous season. An Earl … but she couldn’t remember his name and she reminded herself she needed to be better at remembering people’s names. But he at least asked her to dance and it was better to be seen dancing than to be a wallflower sitting alone on a chair against the wall. She swore if she didn’t get a proposal soon, she’d be on the shelf for sure.

The dance continued and she briefly caught a glimpse of her brother talking with a man she had never seen the likes of. Good heavens, where had he come from and why on earth had she never been introduced to such a divinely handsome man? She continued to stare at him when the opportunity presented itself and she wondered what color his eyes were. It was hard to tell from this distance and from the hundreds of candles casting a soft glow upon the room.

She missed a step in the dance and mumbled an apology to her partner when she stepped on his shoe. She was hard pressed not to crane her neck to further inspect the man who had caught her attention. She generally didn’t care for men with blond hair but in his case she just might make an exception!

The dance ended and the Earl began talking about the weather of all things, and Miranda tried not to appear bored at such a mundane conversation. She looked up only to see Adrian was no longer standing next to her handsome stranger who was looking directly at her. He raised his champagne flute in a silent toast causing Miranda’s eyes to widen. Goodness but he was a bold one and clearly she should stay as far away from him as possible.

Unsure of herself for the first time in her life, she fled the dance floor, leaving the Earl without even a polite thank you for the dance. She headed to the buffet room hoping she could partake of something to calm her nerves. No man had ever had her this flustered and Grace’s words rambled inside her head making Miranda wonder if perhaps Cupid had shot his arrow in Miranda’s direction.

***

Captain Jasper Rousseau observed the beautiful woman as she left the dance floor. She intrigued him, not that he was used to dealing with a young lady who was probably only interested in finding a husband. But there was something about her that had him following her. It must be this damn ball meant for happy couples. If his mother had not requested he accompany her to this event, he would be at his manor getting ready for tomorrow’s business appointment.

He had a new ship to run and didn’t have time to dally with a woman, especially one so obviously young as he guessed her age to be around twenty-three give or take a couple of years. Yet he still found himself following her to see for himself what caused him to become so infatuated with a lady he hadn’t even spoke to as yet. Afterall… what could it hurt to have a short conversation with a beautiful woman?

Lord Digby Osgood held tightly to the lady on his arm after she lost her footing on the ice. He gave her a reassuring smile silently telling her he would never let her fall.  Lady Constance Whittles murmured a soft thank you and Digby swore his heart flipped end over end when she moved a little closer to his side.

They continued on their way through the stalls of the Frost Fair. It had already been a fun-filled day despite the cold weather. They had enjoyed the Tea Shoppe on the Ice followed by the stall featuring Anna’s Hot Roasted Chestnuts. He had been more than thrilled when they had come upon Wilfred Bagshotts Portraits on Demand and he insisted Lady Constance sit for a drawing. The miniature was now tucked away in his coat and he would see that it was properly framed once he returned home.

But when they came upon The Book Palace on Ice for Imaginative and Curious Minds, a squeal of delight escaped Constance’s lips. Digby could not refuse her plea to take only a small peek at what the stall had to offer. Small peek, indeed. He should have known the lady would become lost in the makeshift bookstore the moment she stepped foot inside. Digby had been waiting for the past twenty minutes. Not that he minded. Constance loved her books and he would deny her nothing as long as she was happy.

“Checking out my sister’s competition, Lord Osgood?” That voice held a hint of sarcasm but still remained civil enough to not offend.

Digby turned and saw none other than Samuel Clemens, the editor and owner of The Teatime Tattler. “Mr. Clemens,” Digby replied with a nod of his head. “What brings you here in such inclement weather?”

“My stall is just around the corner and business has never been better. Not only have I sold more copies of my newspaper than usual, but everyone wants a keepsake from the Frost Fair. We keep running out of paper,” he said before he held out a sheet for Digby to take.

His newspaper was nothing more than a gossip rag, Digby thought but took the offering of the keepsake knowing Constance would like it. “It appears the Frost Fair has been a big success for everyone who has a stall,” he replied before pulling the edges of his coat closer together.

“I could not agree more,” Samuel said before his attention turned to the people in The Book Palace stall. “Ah… I see what keeps you here. Lady Constance has been very helpful to my sister’s business. I hope she does not lose the lady to another store once this is over,” he said with a chuckle.

“I am certain Lady Constance is more than happy to work for your sister as long as Miss Amelia will have her.”

Samuel tipped his hat. “I must be off. I cannot keep the world waiting for the latest news.”

Digby watched the man leave before he noticed Constance reaching for her reticule to make her purchase. He quickly stepped forward. “Allow me, my lady,” Digby said.

“I do not mind paying for the book, my lord.” Constance once more brightened his day with her smile.

“I must insist.” Paying the man, Digby offered his arm again to his lady as they began perusing the other stalls. They came upon the next stall, The Mystical Oracle Madam Amy Quinton. “Do you wish your fortune to be told, Constance?” he asked with a grin.

“Perhaps after we see the elephant? You did promise me you would take me to see it,” she said, her eyes twinkling in delight.

“And so I did. Let us make our way to see the beast then we can return here to see what the oracle has to say about our future.”

Constance gave his arm a squeeze. “I already know our future, Digby,” she replied.

“You do?” he said looking down into her beautiful face. Constance never looked lovelier.

“Of course! We shall live happily ever after!”

Digby swore his heart melted right then and there. His future indeed looked bright as long as Lady Constance remained in his life.

Was there really a bookstall at the 1814 Frost Fair?

None of my research found an actual bookstall on the ice but there were nearly a dozen printing presses producing keepsakes and commemorative poems. A printer named George Davis published a 124-page book called Frostiana; or A History of the River Thames In a Frozen State and the Belles referenced this material when we were working on our common theme for Fire & Frost. The entire book was typeset and printed in Davis’s printing stall set up on the frozen Thames.

The 1814 Frost Fair was also it’s last. With the old London Bridge being demolished in 1831, it was replaced with a new bridge with wider arches. This allowed the tide to flow more freely. The river was also embanked during the 19th century causing the river less likely to freeze.

You can read more about printing at the frost fairs here: http://www.letterology.com/2014/02/printing-at-frost-fairs.html

My contribution to Fire & Frost is A Second Chance At Love featuring Lord Digby Osgood and Lady Constance Whittles whom you first met in Under the Mistletoe.

Can the bittersweet frost of lost love be rekindled into a burning flame?

Viscount Digby Osgood returns to London after a two-year absence, planning to avoid the woman he courted and then left. Surely she has moved on with her life; even married by now. A bit of encouragement from a friend, however, pushes him to seek the lady out. Can she ever forgive him and give them a second chance at love?

Lady Constance Whittles has only cared for one man in her life. Even after he broke her heart, it remains fixed on him. Another man tries to replace him, but she soon learns she can never feel for him a shadow of what she still feels for Digby. One brief encounter with Digby confirms it; she is more than willing to forgive him. Can they truly take up where they left off?

Charity projects and a Frost Fair on the Thames bring them together, but another stands in their way. Will he tear them apart?

#BellesInBlue, Be My Guest, Blog Hop, Bluestocking Belles, Follow Your Star Home, Scottish Romance

Welcome to another First Kiss Friday, my lovelies! This week, I have fellow Bluestocking Belle Lizzi Tremayne as my guest who will give you her first kiss scene from her novella Somewhere Like Home in our holiday box set, Follow Your Star Home. Happy reading and enjoy!

Hello! Thanks for coming by today, and thank you, Sherry, for having me here!

We pick up our story as things are going from bad to worse for Rob and Sofia in the Scottish Highlands… and they haven’t even been cleared from their village yet.

Excerpt:

“Sofia.” Rob’s heart wrenched as he called her name from around the corner of the chapel the following morning, his fingers gripping the cut stones.

“Robbie,” she whispered. With a furtive look in all directions, she slipped into the shadows beside him and threw her arms around his neck.

“Are you going up to work at the castle?” He could barely get the words out. “Tell me Archibald was just torturing me,” he murmured, his lips against her kerchief.

“What do you mean?” She pulled her head back and their eyes locked.

“Archibald said a Sofia from the village is going up to work as a maid. You’re the only Sofia here.” He looked away and bit his lip, fearing what he’d see in her eyes.

She shook her head and her fair skin paled. “This is the first I’ve heard of it,” she breathed. “But Màthairwas screaming yesterday morning. She said I wasn’t to talk with you. Did ye ask for me?”

“Apparently, I’m not good enough fer the likes o’ye,” Rob said, his head about to explode, “and I’m to stay away.”

“Oh, Rob,” she said, burying her face in his shirt.

“Yer da was going to talk wi’ me today, but he’s been avoidin’ me,” Rob muttered. “And if I won’t be tacksman, me father’ll disown me. Doesn’t want to know me—ever.”

If she was pale before, she was a ghost now. “We’re both old enough. We can marry. Take me away wi’ ye.”

“If our parents naysay us, Father MacIvor might ha’ somethin’ to say about that, mo luaidh.”

“We can run away and get married.”

He gripped her to him tightly. “I want to, but I canna take ye wherever I might need to go without knowin’ if I could feed us.”

“I’ll wait for ye, then.”

He nodded and nearly smiled, though his heart was breaking. “I’ll find work and build something for us, mo chridhe, then return for you. I’ll show your da, if not your màthair, that I am ‘good enough’—if ye can wait.”

“Forever, Rob,” she said fervently, “forever I’ll wait fer ye, mo chridhe. We can write, thanks to yer teachin’ me to read an’ write.”

“I dinna ken where I’ll be yet.” He pulled her hard against him and leaned back against the wall, its roughness digging into his back beneath his shirt, while he searched his mind for a way they could exchange letters.

The stones of the chapel.

For the first time since he’d entered Sofia’s father’s house the previous morning, he drew a full breath and then another. Squeezing her to him once more, he tilted her chin up to his. “The priest. He’ll exchange letters for us.”

“Do ye think he will?”

“I’m sure he will.” His lips cracked into the first grin in days, and he took a deep breath. “He’ll be happier for that than marry us against our family’s wishes, anyway.”

“Rob,” she said, pulling her kerchief from her head and looping it into the beginnings of a knot, “this was my grandmother’s kerchief. That makes it more solemn. Shall we? If the priest won’t marry us, we can pledge our troths anyway and handfast ourselves. Seanairsaid it was done that way in the old days.”

He smiled and helped her tie the kerchief around their hands, joining left to left and then holding their right hands together over the top.

“I don’t know how they did it,” Sofia murmured, eyes shining, “but this should work.”

“Sofia,” Rob said, for her ears alone, “to you I pledge my troth. I will return to marry you and become your husband, for ever and ever.”

Sofia repeated the words, finishing with, “and become yer wife, fer ever and ever.” Their lips met to seal their joining. “I canna believe this will be our last kiss. Come home to me soon,” she whispered.

“When I return, we’ll have kisses anytime we will.”

“At least yer calmer now,” Sofia murmured. “Yer language reverts when ye’re upset.

Rob allowed himself to smile at that. He could only hold her as her tears fell wetly on his shirt, and his into her hair, until the sun rose and their dark sanctuary slipped away into the morning mist.

“I’ll return for you, mo nighean ruadh, mo chridhe, my heart.” They untied the scarf and held fast to each other again. “Now go,” Rob said against her hair.

“Wait, Rob, gi’ me yer dirk,” she said and reached for one of the tendrils of hair curling around her face. “And the locket from your màthair.”

He drew his blade and carefully cut the lock Sofia held out, then handed it to her. Opening the golden heart, she placed the curl inside, sealed it shut, and kissed it.

“Keep it by yer heart,” she murmured.

“Until the day I die,” Rob said, watching her glowing eyes. “I love you. Now off with you before you’re seen.” He kissed her one last time and gave her a gentle push.

Not looking back, she turned and ran for home.

Now back to the real world… or is it?

I would like to first thank author Karysa Faire for including me in the wonderful opportunity to discuss one of my characters. Before I get into that, I’d like to introduce you to Karysa. Besides writing, she also heads up a wonderful event on Facebook called Snippet Sunday where you can read excerpts from different author’s current work in progress. You can find answers to her character she introduced last week at:http://wp.me/p1t6NZ-Ac

Karysa is a writer of the romantic, the unseen, the other worldly and the horrific. Residing in Northern California with her daughter, dog, and cat, she reads when she can and cleans her house when she has to.

~Meet My Character: Amiria~

What is the name of your character? Is he/she fictional or a historic person.

Amiria of Berwyck is one of the last remaining descendants of the Scottish clan MacLaren. She is a fictional character.

When and where is the story set?

The story is set in twelfth century England at Berwyck. The castle is situated on a high cliff and is a prime location bordering England and Scotland. It’s seen many years of war between two kings struggling to keep control of the area.

What should we know about her?

Amiria would rather be dressed in boots, hose, and tunic than stuck in a solar with needle and thread. She can be a bit stubborn but has a soft side to her too.

What is the main conflict? What messes up her life?

The main conflict is that Berwyck castle has been under seize for two fortnights. With the falling of the barbican gate, Amiria’s home is now controlled by the Devil’s Dragon of Blackmore who demands clan MacLaren’s fealty. Amiria hastily concocts a ruse that quickly begins to unravel and that’s only the beginning of what begins to disturb her.

What is the personal goal of the character?

She is fiercely loyal to her family and will do anything to protect them. To say anything more would give away some of the twists and turns I have planned for my readers!

Is there a working title for this novel, and can we read more about it?

If My Heart Could See You debuted eighteen days ago and hit several of Amazon’s Hot New Release lists along with being in the top ten for its genre in two categories. It is available in paperback and major eBook retailers. Not bad for a first novel!

Blog Hop, If My Heart Could See You, Medieval Romance, Sherry Ewing, Time Travel, Writing

Thanks for stopping by my blog and the world of an aspiring author.

I’d like to first thank Regina Kammer for tagging me in the Writing Process Blog Hop. She’s a fellow Romance Writer of America author who writes erotica. I recently read her novel, The General’s Wife: An America Revolutionary Tale. All I can say about Ms. Kammer’s writing is that it sizzles! You can find her books on Amazon, so pick up a copy today. If you’d care to see her writing process from last week, you can find her blog at: http://kammerotica.com/writing-process-blog-hop/

Now it’s my turn. Ever wonder what’s inside an author’s head or how they came up with their ideas? Then read on and let me take you into the world I’ve been building along with how my thought process works.

woman-865111_1280

What am I working on?

I have a lot on my plate right now since I am furiously working on getting my debut novel, If My Heart Could See You, published this summer. It’s an historical romance set in twelfth century England. My heroine, Amiria of Berwyck Castle, has her home invaded by Dristan, the Devil’s Dragon of Blackmore and champion knight of King Henry II. Lies, deceit, and treachery attempt to tear apart the fragile truce they have, but only love will hold them together.

When I started writing this manuscript, I had no idea that I would continue the next four novels with secondary characters. I guess I just fell in love with them so much that I felt they deserved a story of their very own. I certainly didn’t expect the second novel, For All of Ever, to turn into a time travel. I’ve just finished the next round of edits on it. When I started writing this story, I came to the conclusion that one book wasn’t going to cover everything I saw for my characters. Unless, of course, I wanted some huge tome that no one could hold without a fork lift. I hate cliff hangers but it had to be done. Riorden and Katherine’s story will continue in Only For You.

My current work in progress is entitled A Knight to Call My Own. Originally this was going to be the second book in the series. My heroine, Lynet, is the youngest daughter from If My Heart Could See You. It’s coming along although it may be a little slower than I would like especially with everything else I have going on. When I was looking around for cover designs, I came across Estrella Cover Art. I loved this cover so much that I had to purchase it before I had even managed to get a few chapters done. I just knew “she” was my Lynet!

If you’re not an author trying to break into the whole Indie Author craze of self-publishing, I’ll tell you that it’s an insane process from start to finish and I’m only in the beginning phases. Sometimes I think that writing the manuscript in the first place was easier than trying to figure out all the do’s and don’ts of attempting to do everything on my own. Or maybe I’m just a stubborn mule and control freak who has a hint of OCD in her. Still…there’s a lot to do. Editing, editing and editing some more until you can barely look at the storyline anymore; formatting for different platforms; copyrights and licensing; business cards and updating your website; and then there’s social media. Yes…it’s like a four letter word because you can get lost in a time suck from hell trying to get yourself visible. And it never ends. It’s all part of the whole marketing process and something you have to commit yourself to. There are days when all I want to do is write and forget the rest.

How does my work differ from others of its genre?

I didn’t set out to write an historical romance novel filled with pages and pages of descriptions of scenery, clothing, or actual history. Let’s face it…as a reader, I tend to skim over those pages to get back to the plot and those characters that keep me turning the pages in the first place. I think my stories are more for historical setting. Does that break the rules of writing in the historical genre? Maybe and yet maybe that’s why I plan to self-publish.

Nor do I fill my scenes with a lot of explicit sex scenes and language. That’s just not me as a writer and not what I want to bring to my readers. Yes I know…but sex sells you might say, and I’d have to agree with you. So I try to bring some heat into my love scenes but also leave some of it to the reader’s imagination. Sometimes less is more.

I suppose trying to brand myself as an author would be difficult if I were to try and find an agent or editor given that I’m writing time travels interwoven into my historical series’. At least that’s the story of what I was getting from the rejection letters for traditional publishing. But my stories are all connected, and I like bringing in glimpses of the other characters from my other books. Not all my manuscripts are time travels although I sure have a lot of fun writing them. Maybe that will be my niche. I write because I love to write. I weave a tale that I myself enjoy reading and hopefully you will too and post a nice review when the time comes.

Why do I write what I do?

This question is easy. I read my first romance novel when I was just a teenager. The Flame and the Flower by Kathleen E. Woodiwiss started my journey into historical romances. I’ve been hooked ever since. She was one of my favorite authors for many years until one day I came across A Knight in Shining Armor by Jude Deveraux. These two authors, along with many others, blazed the path ahead of me as I fell into their worlds along with falling in love with their characters.

For the most part, I’m pretty particular about what I read. When it came time for me to finally make an attempt at writing, there really was only one thing I could write about that was near and dear to my heart: an historical. They say you should write about what you know. Personally, I’ve never set even one foot on English soil, but I love the whole time period from medieval all the way through the Regency era. It took two and a half years to write my first manuscript, One Moment in Time. It will probably take just as long to re-write the dear thing since I’ve learned so much in the past several years on the craft of writing. Yes, dear readers, writing is a craft. When you really think you’ve honed in on it and finally got it down, you end up learning something new that only makes your writing stronger. And then you edit your manuscript again, and again, and again…

How does my writing process work?

I have voices inside my head.

No really…any writer will tell you the same thing. We breathe life into our characters that become so real they take over the story. Literally…as a writer, you only think you know where your plot will take you until your characters start jabbering away at you at all hours of the day and night. They’ll tell you in no uncertain terms that you will conform to their ways and the direction they want to go. Lead on, I tell them! Lead on…

Generally I have an idea of where I’m going with my story lines but I write by the seat of my pants. I don’t plot nor do I spend a lot of time writing outlines of chapters. I can get my inspiration from a song on the radio to an overheard bit of conversation while I’m walking down the street. I can be driving in my car and realize I’ve “spaced off” while I listen to my characters dialog continue from wherever I left off writing. Crazy, I know, but it’s so true. My poor family has all but given up trying to have conversations with me. Usually I’m nodding my head to whatever conversation they’re attempting to have with me, yet I haven’t any clue what they said I’m so wrapped up in writing.

Pandora’s Box has been opened. I’ve got so many idea’s swimming around inside my head I sometimes wonder when I’ll have the time to get it all written down. Perhaps this is the price I must pay for waiting so long to begin a writing career but I’ll gladly pay it. Some people are born to write. I’m one of those people. If you are too, then my advice is to just sit down and start writing and then write some more. Don’t worry if it’s not perfect. It won’t be. First drafts never are. But take some classes and learn the craft. Then write some more. I promise it will be worth it!

Thanks for stopping by my blog but this is only the beginning. The Writing Process Blog Hop continues on. Please check out the next author to find out about how their process works. She’ll be putting up her post on Monday, May 5th:

Angela Myron was born in Vancouver, Canada in 1973. She grew up in the piney forests of southern British Columbia, studying tiny blue bells, dodging hidden cacti, and creating fantasy worlds in her back yard. She loved to imagine lands of fairies and goblins, then invite friends over to introduce them. Angela studied biology and professional writing at university, starting her degree at the University of Victoria in Canada and finishing it at San Francisco State University. She wrote grant proposals for nonprofits, technical manuals for software, and freelance journalism before writing fiction. http:/www.angelamyron.com/blog.html
